In 1801, the British captured Rohilkhand and it was divided into two districts- Bareilly and Moradabad. The city was also a part of the rebellion during the First War of Independence in 1857. In the early 19th century, the British began exporting brass handicrafts to foreign markets, attracting artisans from other parts of India such as Lucknow, Agra and Banaras. After India gained independence from the British in 1947, Moradabad soon became a part of the state of Uttar Pradesh. During the 1980s, the brass industry boomed and as a result, iron and aluminum industries began to develop in the region.
